New York Fashion Week - Fall 2014 Favourites

(New York) Fashion Week is always an exciting event for all the fashion lovers around the world; attendees, wanna-be attendees, designers and models alike. Hopefully, I'll be among the attendees one day, using my own photographs for such blog posts, but until then, style.com and vogue.com will have to do.

My top four collections from this season were 3.1 Phillip Lim, DKNY, Jenny Packham and Gucci. Firstly, I must mention that I just loooooove Fall/Winter fashion because of the majority of darker colours - 99% of my closet is made up of black or somewhat black shoes and clothing. (I do think I have a problem though, which I realised upon packing for my recent trip to Cape Town. Of the six pairs of shoes I took, five were black. I returned home with a new pair, and needless to say, they too, were black.) With this newfound information, it's a litte ironic that my favourite collections have more colour than the general fall/winter collections. Hey, maybe there's hope for me after all!

3.1 Phillip Lim - Fall 2014
Phillip Lim's collection was inspired by his imaginary muse, "Soleil — a fun and culturally curious woman. Her world is somewhere between instant pop and culture.” It's ironic considering that this is a fall/winter collection, and Soleil means 'sun' in French. Anyway, I really adore the pastels and glitter contrasted with black. It's a case of the best of both worlds, which I should probably make a few mental notes of. This 'Soleil' could teach me a thing or two.
DKNY - Fall 2014
It was love at first sight for DKNY and I this time, as I die for leather anything (faux, of course - I'm vegetarian.) The same goes for the fur, which looks dynamite with leather! The urban New York streets definitely made their mark, with the sort of I-just-threw-this-on, it-doesn't-fit-but-it-fits and still very chic fashion - tumblr, eat your heart out! If I could, I'd buy the pieces pronto, starting with those leather pants. *insert googly eyes here*

Jenny Packham - Fall 2014
Jenny Packham was stunning as usual, and very glamourous with intricate beading and dreamy colours. It's a sort of blasé evening wear; the whole glittery sweaters with full taffeta skirts and pockets. (Who doesn't love skirts with pockets?!) The collection was so sophisticated, and I feel like with any of these pieces, it would take very minimal effort to get a very elegant look. Très chic, all round.

Gucci - Fall 2014
Gucci, Gucci, Gucci... This collection had my mother and I just ooh-ing and ah-ing at this jacket, and that coat, and that print, and those boots. Honestly, this was my absolute favourite collection from this season, and one for the woman who knows what she wants and knows how to get it. Creative director, Giannini, described the Gucci woman as a woman who “dresses to please herself rather than others.” The clean cuts and boyish tailoring paired with pretty, dusty pastels and fierce animal print made that statement all on their own. This is very nearly how I picture my future closet... I'll be dreaming of these pieces for a while!

Music Monday | Sweater Weather - The Neighbourhood

who: The Neighbourhood (Jesse Rutherford, Jeremy Freedman, Zach Abels and Mikey Margott)
what: Alternative/Indie rock group
when: 2011 - present
Before Oh, Kenzo I had a blog called Le Petite Pois which I've spoken about here. I used to have a Music Monday segment which I used to share all the lovely music I came across, because it was just too good (in my opinion) to keep all to myself. I feel like my music posts are lacking, which is pretty unfortunate, considering how rapidly my music library continues growing. And so, I've decided to start the Music Mondays again! Yay for finding, sharing and fangirling over good music!

For this first post, I've got Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood. I've been crazy about this one for months (I'm surprised I haven't tired of it yet, it's that good!), and the fact that it's finally getting some decent recognition on the South African charts makes me tingle inside. I'm listening to it as I write this, singing along to every single word, and it's so good, and I wish I could be the one hearing it for the first time, and ughhhhh... You'll love me if you haven't already heard it. No doubt.

The song is off their album I Love You., which is just great (Let It Go, Staying Up and W.D.Y.W.F.M? are other favourites of mine from the same album). Get it here.

Art | Heather Hansen

I love doing research for art projects, because I always end up finding the most incredibly innovative people. (There are some crazy talented people out there, no lie.) The best of the artworks left over from school projects end up right here on this blog, and are often used again for my own references later. (Double score!)

This is Heather Hansen, a performance artist who uses her entire body to create these larger than life kinetic drawings. Speak of really getting in to your work, huh? Not only are her works really beautiful and simple (I'm 150% for minimalism), but the process of making these artworks makes for a great picture. Her body covered in charcoal just looks pretty darn sick.

As a performance artist, Hansen creates these works in front of live audiences in her studio, which leaves literally no room for correction of errors or "creative blocks". I think that, if nothing else (ie. God-given talent), the fact that her process is so organic is what makes the artworks so cool. I can only imagine how much self-assurance one must have to continue a charcoal drawing, smudges and all, up to the final piece, in front of people, and still seem so calm. She's amazing!
